The beginning of Poznań

Description:

It is a fact that Poznań fortified settlement dates back to the 10th century. It was situated on Ostrów Tumski – an island on the Warta River, where the first Polish Cathedral was built. Ostrów Tumski was also the seat of first Polish rulers – Mieszko I of Poland and Bolesław Chrobry.  A number of settlements developed around the city. The oldest was Śródka – trading village on the right bank of the river. Little farther there was Commandery, ruled by the order of the Knights, later known as Knights of Malta. Now near the old chivalrous church is Malta lake and large recreational complex.

Historical Tour of Poznań

Description:

In the XIII century the city of Poznań was relocated to the left bank of the Warta River, while its centre – the Old Market Square and the Town Hall – became the symbols of the city self-government. Przemysł I, the ruler of Greater Poland, moved his seat to Przemysł Hill, an area rising above the city, which later became a place of residence for Polish kings visiting Poznań. Inhabitants of Poznań were most proud of parish Church. Germans ruled in Poznan since the late 18th century. They planned urban layout of the city in 19th century (today Wolnosci Plaza). On the initiative of the German emperor Wilhelm II, between 1902-1913 in Poznań a bold urban project was carried out. The area of former fortifications was meant to become the residential heart of the new german imperial city.

Description:

Ostrów Lednicki is an island in the southern part of Lake Lednica, located between the cities of Gniezno and Poznań. A gród (a medieval Slavonic fortified settlement) was built here in the Middle Ages. Existing ruins of a chapel, church and palace, thought to be the home of the first Kings of the Piast dynasty, have been roofed over for preservation. Today the ruins are of archaeological significance, and the site of the Museum of the Piast Dynasty. It is Poland`s largest open-air museum. Gniezno is the historic capital of Polan and symbolic place of coronation of the first Polish kings (11-13 century). Gniezno hides in their temples and museums treasures from the period of the formation of the Polish state. Gniezno is also the center of the historic Piast Route, the most important cultural a tourist route of our country. Gniezno has one of the most valuable monuments of Romanesque art in Poland (Gniezno Doors and liturgical chalices of 11-12th Century). During the trip we visit the Primate metropolitan church (which is also the oldest religious sanctuary Poles) and see a multimedia presentation about the beginnings of Polish statehood.

Once there were 92 breweries in Poznań. What happened to them? What kind of beer do Poznań inhabitants drink nowadays? Is there anything left from the beer tradition? You will learn about it during this trip. The nineteen-century brewing tradition is told by the walls of the Old Brewery. Nowadays, only its name remains unchanged and connected with beer tradition, however it has already had enough time to advertise the city of Poznań, both in Poland and abroad. Tour includes a visit in LECH Brewery – biggest brewery in region. Upon arrival the group will be assisted by one of the brewery guides, ready to share his or her knowledge about beer. After the one-hour tour participants will have a chance to taste a pint of the “amber fluid”.
